A brick extension transforms South West London semi.
The clients of the 16th Century Cottage, wanted to transform the living areas of their house to suit their large family and add a recreation building to the property containing pool, spa and cinema facilities.
The first phase of the project focussed on reorganising the entrance sequence of the house and the underused next to the property was transformed into an entrance building with space for coats, storage and cloakroom. The new vaulted entrance space is linked to the main building by a minimal glass corridor, which leads you to the main kitchen and dining areas.
A small extension transformed the feel of these spaces and allows the back of the house to connect better with the re-landscaped gardens. The second phase of the project involved the creation of a new building to house a unique glass enclosed pool and spa facilities. The main building drew on the language of the previous oak framed garage building and provides a contemporary reinterpretation of the oak framing and cat slide roof common to this typology.
Additional space is gained through a mezzanine bedroom and basement, which contain the pool equipment, a large wood chip boiler which now heats the entire house and the cinema room. The pool itself is housed within a fully glazed box which avoids an overly dominant building for the outside and creates the sensation of swimming in the woods when using the pool.
The new building is sited to create a courtyard like effect to the entrance drive and the new landscaping reinforces this approach.
Completed: 2015.
