Situated in the centre of Letchworth Garden City next to the train station, Dorchester House comprises a level of Retail Units at ground level and two levels of empty office space above.
The building itself is something of an eyesore in the context of the otherwise attractive Town Centre so the brief was to convert the building into residential units, add an additional rooftop layer and reclad the building.
We looked closely at the surrounding buildings and proposed a reworking of the façade that picked up on the white column and beam structure of the adjacent buildings and the material usage of white render to the base and bricks above.
The new cladding allows the whole façade to be thermally upgraded and the design of the building at rooftop level is designed to pick up on the brick pergolas found in local parks.
The incorporation of planting and a public roof terrace creates an attractive building forming part of the Station square and an attractive place to live for local residents.
